My Foray into Urban Gardening + A Weekly Round-Up

Saturday we planted an Urban Garden!

Err, yes, I live in the ‘burbs.

I tried a garden a few years ago and it didn’t work. I’m thinking this urban gardening thing just might.

What’s in there?

I’m so excited!  Wish me luck!

Now I need to finish my weekend by catching up on work for my grad class.  While I’m reading and writing a paper (okay, three papers–did I mention I’m behind?), how about a recap of this week’s posts?

    1. I will, Wendy! If this works, I think it will show me that, small scale, I could manage growing some of my own foods, without the huge commitment of a garden!

  1. I have a few of my favorite herbs growing in pots on my back deck, that’s all I can handle. To me, your garden looks like a country farm! Good luck with your veggies and herbs.

    1. LOL, Elizabeth! I tried herbs one year and couldn’t even handle that, so yay, you! Fingers crossed this works! How fun to try different veggies through the seasons!

  2. I’m so excited about your garden. I was at the farmers’ market yesterday and was admiring the herbs. I would love to try growing them but there isn’t enough sun in my apartment. 🙁 Good luck! Can’t wait to hear how it goes.

    1. Thank you, Mignon, I will. I was coveting herbs at the FM last year too — I think that was part of the inspiration for the mini garden!

  3. Good luck with your garden! I wish I could grow plants (decorative or herbs, doesn’t really matter :)) ) – I always try and fail, they die on me :(. Fingers crossed and looking forward to progress pics!

    1. Anda, I’m nervous because I’m terrible with plants. We have none in the house (mostly because of the cats). I appreciate your crossed fingers!

    1. Robin, I’m so glad! I tell you, in some ways I feel selfish — I’m getting so much out of the series myself! Thanks for letting me know that you’re enjoying it!

    1. I actually asked my mother about that, too, and she said you can. You just need a huge pot (I liked the storage bin). I’m going to give it try!

    2. Yes! My mother-in-law is a master gardener so I sent her a list of things I was interested in growing and she told me how and what to plant. We decided to use the big storage bin for the kale (I bought five plants) and just punched holes in the bottom of it.

  4. JL, your garden looks great! 🙂 We put our garden in this weekend, as well. So fun to watch things grow…even more fun is eating what you have grown (pesticide free). Enjoyed your recap – everything looks SO yummy! 🙂

  5. Love your garden! It looks totally manageable, and a good adaptation for the space you have. I just planted an 8×8 ft garden for the first time, and am a little nervous! I just posted pictures of a cool “rolling” compost bin that we made this weekend. A smaller version of it might be good for you.
