Good morning, friends! I have a potpourri of news and blog items for you this week. Let’s go…
In the news
- Following up on an item I shared last week, turns out Ellen won’t be making a vegan cat food (cats are carnivores, after all): Update: More Details About Ellen’s Upcoming Vegan Pet Food.
- The NIH Accepts Plan to Scale Back Chimp Research. It’s a start!
- Lots of Woodstock Farm Animal Sanctuary news! WFAS’s very own Jenny Brown, and Albie, are on ABC.com: Three-Legged Goat Shares Special Bond With Rescuer.
The NY Daily News included the WFAS 2012 Calendar (only $20!) in their Pet-acular Gift Guide. And in other “news,” I received an email from WFAS notifying me that my mother-in-law made a donation, in honor of Dave and me! What a wonderful gift! We were indeed honored and especially happy for the animals because all donations made this month are matched!
- Anyone up for a metro NYC road trip? (Andrea, I’m talking to you!): We could head east for Fake meat: Long Island rockers open vegetarian eatery in Seaford or to New Jersey: New restaurant at Lawrenceville Inn emphasizes vegan and gluten-free fare and Wildflower Earthly Vegan Fare offers meatless temptations in Millville. Chicagoans might want to check out Vegetarian Express where, according to The Chicago Tribune, the menu surprises at new vegetarian spot. And, if you’re in Nashville, you can just stay home: Vegin-In Delivery Service Makes Eating Vegan Easy (you can read more about the vegan meals on wheels in The Tennessean–cool concept).
- Shape Magazine offers up Easy Ways to Veganize Your Meals.
On the web
- TODAY! Save 15% on all orders of $20 or more at Vegan Essentials! From soy curls to the Candle 79 Cookbook to vegan shoes, they have it all!
- Is your booze vegan? ‘Tis the season for holiday parties and toasting in a new year. Barnivore is my go-to site to discover vegan wines. They are updating the site these days (and working on an official Barnivore smart phone app!) so be sure to check it out. Oh, if you’re new to veganism you may be thinking “vegan wine?” Here’s some info from Barnivore:
Brewmasters, winemakers, and distillers may include animal ingredients in their products directly, or they might use them in the processing and filtration.
When making the product, dairy, honey, and other things (including, in one case, a whole chicken dropped in the tank) are ingredients in the final recipe.
When filtering the drinks prior to bottling, companies can use things like isinglass (from fish bladder,) gelatin, egg whites, and sea shells, among other things. These products grab onto the impurities and make it easier to catch them in the filters, though there are many animal-free alternatives in use.
- Smart phone users, check out Apps For Cooking For Special Dietary Needs.
- My friend Ashley of The Unintentional Vegan hosted a 5-Days of wellness series on her blog this week.
On this blog, things slowed down a bit. (I think I blogged daily for three months straight!)
- THURSDAY: Dirt Candy, NYC
Now I’m about to crack open a new cookbook to read, test, and review. I’ll be back tomorrow to share my latest meal at Candle 79. Have a great Sunday!

I’m definitely on the fence about vegan food for pets and especially cats. Interesting read! Also god bless you for linking up the apps – I’ve been looking for some good cooking ones. Off to download some 🙂
Yup, kitties are obligate carnivores. Puppies, however, are very happy and healthy vegan pets! So Ellen can make plenty of dog food.
