Vegan eats in Oakland, CA + Nick Cooney on Easy Vegan Monday!

I was in Oakland this week to meet with a consulting client – a quick trip that included some delicious food! I stopped by Souley Vegan for a late dinner the night I arrived.

I had the mac n’ cheese for dinner and took the tofu and grits back to my hotel to have for breakfast the next morning.

And the next morning I had this sweet potato cupcake (with lemon frosting for breakfast)

Cupcakes are almost exactly like muffins, right?

I met my friend Annelies for dinner Wednesday night at the new Millennium. Yep, the restaurant left San Francisco last year and have reopened across the bay.

I can never pass up picked veggies and am glad I didn’t. The sour nibbles were a terrific start. The king trumpet mushroom starter was the hands down winner: lightly breaded and fried, but not greasy, and chewy ‘shrooms were substantial and simply flavorful. The main, a tamale was quite good. I was pretty full from the starter so I had to give up halfway through. The menu was a bit smaller than I expected and I found myself far more intrigued by the starters and salads.

I’m back home and have a fun weekend planned (which includes the Tiny House Jamboree!) and have a great radio show scheduled Monday.

My guest is Nick Cooney, author of Change Of Heart: What Psychology Can Teach Us About Spreading Social Change and Veganomics: The Surprising Science on What Motivates Vegetarians, from the Breakfast Table to the Bedroom.  We will discuss Nick’s most recent book, How to be Great at Doing Good and how it can inform our vegan volunteerism and philanthropy.

Questions for Nick? The show is live so ask here now and I’ll ask on Monday!

  1. This is very timely for me JL as I’m going to visit family next month in Alameda, just south of Oakland. They’re not vegan but I’ll drag them to Souley Vegan at least. I also read about a place called Karma Kitchen in Oakland which isn’t vegan but sounds like a neat idea, and the first cat cafe in the US opened in Oakland not too long ago so I’m hoping to go there. Thanks for the info!
