I planted my urban garden three weeks ago.
and look at it three weeks later!
I’m so happy!
My cherry tomato plant, Charlie, is my pride and joy. (When we bought him he looked like the sad Charlie Brown Christmas tree–you know, the last tomato plant, wilting and leaning over–so we named him Charlie.)
Look at Charlie now!
I read that once you see the flower, tomatoes are just two weeks away.
We’re realizing there may be an “eggplant situation” — meaning it should be long and thin (it’s an oriental eggplant) and probably will outgrown the pot —
so we need to keep an eye on it (the cilantro is growing well, too).
The kale is thriving.
as is the fennel.
The leeks don’t seem to look like leeks yet
(does anyone know the growing time for leeks?) but the herbs
(dill, parsley, basil and thyme) are abundant!
I watered my garden every day for the first 13 days and then mother nature took over this week. While I grumble about how the rain keeps me from my outdoor triathlon training I certainly appreciate what it’s doing for my beautiful vegetables.
I plan to add a couple of planters to the deck this weekend. One for peppers and one for lettuce.
How’s your garden doing?

Looking good JL. It is amazing what plants can do with just a little good soil, water, and sunshine + LOVE. I am a novice gardener and my plants are thriving in spite of my brown thumb. 🙂 Your tomatoes are flowering. Nice. Little fruits to form next. Yay!
So true about all the ingredients — because I have no skills in this area! LOL The rain this week really helped and the garden looks gorgeous this morning in the sunshine. I can’t wait to see what comes out of your garden — I trust you’ll update us on your blog (which I’m really enjoying)
This is really neat! I’m interested to see how the leeks turn out – that’s not one I’ve seen grown very often. I need to get motivated and some planters for herbs!
I’m nervous about the leeks! The leaves are very thin and when I buy leeks they are super-tall and THICK. Not sure about this at all! LOL
My brown thumb is managing to grow: basil, cilantro, mint, serrano pepper, and…. cherry tomatoes! I need to transfer my tomato plant to a larger pot. I really didn’t expect it to grow for me but I have 2 little green future tomatoes on it. Wheeeee.
Your urban garden looks way better than mine.
I think I will squeal with delight when I see the little green tomatoes! LOL Serrano peppers, YUM! I’ll have to look for those today at the nursery!
Two (green) thumbs up, JL! “=_ Your garden looks great! Love seeing the progress. Personally, I think Charlie is doing so well because you have named him and nurtured him, not to mention…I’m sure you talk to him. 🙂 you “grow,” Girl! 😉
I do talk to him! This morning I said “how’s my big boy? oh so tall!” 🙂
so inspiring! we’re about to move into the “urbansphere” and I have been collecting so many notes on container gardening, etc. You’re a pro at this, JL!! Book marking to boast about your successes to my husband! <3
Oh, good, Allyson! Please let me know how it goes! This is a great resource: http://www.urbanorganicgardener.com/
Charlie looks awesome! I wish my garden was coming along as well as yours. My strawberries are popping up, and the blueberry bushes are blossoming, but the bulbs I planted a while ago are being stubborn. Good luck with your eggplant!
Yum — are you going to make ice cream with that fruit 😉
Everything looks great! I tried spinach that didnt work,my watermelon and cantaloupe plants are doing well,my green beans and cucumbers are coming along, raspberry, cortland grapes are doing well also,my blueberry, strawberry and kale didn’t fare well! lol.But i’ll keep trying! Lowes has a plant bed with trellis that i want, and i saw online where someone made a self watering planted out of one of those containers that you have your fennel and kale in! but i like the idea of using those containers as opposed to planters.
Your garden sounds amazing. I was afraid of beans and I don’t know why! LOL Maybe I should try some!
They grow really quickly! I just noticed today two mangos seeds i planted have sprouted and one of the opineapples i started is slowly coming along! My green throwing is growing! LOL
Avocados are now the bane of my existence! I have been trying them forever, one of this days…..(sighs)
You must be somewhere positively delightful to be growing mango, pineapple and avocados! Jealous!
So fun, love the garden and it’s looking great. Mine needs help, still need to do a little replanting in our garden beds. Kale is an awesome crop that keeps on giving, I’m planning to dedicate an entire planter bed to it this year.
Great idea to have a kale planter. It is one of the most versatile veggies, isn’t it?
Nicely done! My kale has gotten bigger (it must know it is my favourite!), but nothing else is growing. I haven’t killed anything yet, but the starter plants of lettuce and strawberries are exactly the same size as a few weeks ago. Perhaps a little more water is needed. Four beautiful young deer came through the yard the other day, so I’m glad I put up the fence. Keep growing!
Kale is my favorite, too! My mother-in-law (a master gardener) gave me strict instructions to water the garden every single day — unless it rained. Mother nature took care of some major watering over the last six days so I can only assume that’s why it’s looking as good as it does right now. I must stay diligent!
Looks great! Enjoy your goodies! We are going to be planting our second harvest soon. Can’t wait!
I love reading about your veggies on your blog–can’t wait to see what’s next!
This is the great blog, I’m reading them for a while,
thanks for the new posts!
This looks great JL! Leeks grow very slowly, it’s probably gonna be by the end of the fall when they are ready (I don’t exactly know the number of weeks).
We (my mom and me) are growing veggies in our garden too. Tomatoes, chard, cucumber, eggplants, zucchini, beets, and so on.
And lots and lots of herbs like mint, jasmin, thyme, coriander, basil, …
Also strawberries, raspberries, blue berries, cherries, figs, apples and pears. It’s lovely to watch all those things grow.
