Today on 719woman.com I make a flavorful $10 vegan meal for a family of four! (VIDEO)

719 is my new area code.

Three months ago I moved to Colorado. But many, many months prior to moving I started doing research. I wanted to get connected to my local community. I found lots of ways to meet vegans and find vegan stores and restaurants. I also did research to find resources for all kinds of things like social activities, professional and political activities, and more.

One resource I discovered was 719woman.com.

719woman.com

Through this site I was able to learn about local restaurants, deals for thrifty shopping with a nod to fashion, and local resources. I started following 719woman.com on Facebook as soon as we arrived in Colorado. One day I saw one of  Tammy York’s cooking videos. It was for a beef stew for a family of four for under $10. I took a chance and sent her a message and asked her if she would like to do a video together, in which we made a vegan meal for a family of four. She immediately said yes.

Tammy’s blog, and Tammy, encompass so much of what I believe in. Tammy wants to empower women to live healthy, happy lives; she wants them to have fun with fashion and fun in life without breaking the bank. She is about lifting women up. 719woman.com offers a great contest, a Goodwill Makeover, where winning women get a wardrobe boost from Tammy and Ashley (719woman.com’s fashion contributor). Good stuff.

Thursday morning I met Tammy at her home. She is such a lovely, energetic, generous person! She welcomed me into her kitchen, where she was wrapping up with Ashley, her guest on another cooking video, and Trig, who was taping the segment. Tammy wrote a very kind post yesterday about her experience meeting me … and her “vegan” expectations and assumptions that were debunked: Vegan Cooking…Meet JL Fields, My New Friend & Co-Author Of “Vegan For Her”…Inspirational & Interesting.

We really did hit it off and I have to say her magnanimous post was heartwarming … and hilarious! I loved reading about what she expected and what she got when she met me!

Today on 719woman.com Tammy featured our cooking video: Mediterranean Beans With Greens & Grains….$10 or Less Meal (And Vegan), which you can also view right here:

I love sharing how simple vegan cooking can be – and how just a few plant-based ingredients can turn into a plate filled with flavor – and Tammy allowed me the opportunity to demonstrate this in the video. By the way, Tammy, Ashley and Trig all loved the dish. It made me so happy!

I had a blast cooking with my new friend! Tammy and I look forward to doing it again soon (we have ideas!).

  1. I absolutely loved reading Tammy’s introduction to the video and words about you. She summed up your energy and enthusiasm really well. Congrats on the exposure, and kudos to you for making so much impact in your community!!

  2. You are just so badass JL! I’ve been keeping up with all your activism lately, and it just makes me so happy. Kudos to you for taking vegan mainstream by teaming up with an omni blogger!

    1. @a2da25b31bb18ec3b56b64a7de22d4cc:disqus , you made my day! 🙂 Thank you so much for the support!

  3. I loved both your post and Tammy’s post about your little vegan cooking adventure! It’s so awesome to see how easy it can be to spread the vegan message without being pushy or elitist! Great video, too!

  4. I love everything about this!! There is so much great stuff here–the great blog post about making connections, the opportunity to bring vegan food to a non-vegan audience (yay for that!), the fun video, Tammy’s surprise at finding out that you aren’t “out there,” and that fabulous recipe! (Plus, I think I’m going to start to drink champagne when I cook.)

    1. Oh, Ginny, your words mean so much to me! I consider that your recipe because I created it for you! Oh, I highly recommend drinking champagne while cooking! 🙂 xo

  5. Your video was AWESOME JL! You are very natural with the camera, and you are warm and inviting with Tammy and with us, your audience. 🙂 Time for more videos… and I think your theme can be cooking vegan with JL – and champagne. CHEERS!

  6. Great video! Love how proactive you were about contacting Tammy and making a video with her! Also, love that you are educating “the masses” about being vegan. I am spreading the vegan message in my little world too. We have “goody day” at work, and a friend asked me for a vegan recipe she could make. Then she said “You know those vegan coconut pb cups you made for us, I loved those, bring that recipe for me.” How cool is that! Thank you for your blog and all that you do! MJ

    1. @2a3ab45f615b99b59f08d2b52da45bf8:disqus , that is AWESOME! This is a strategy I recommend in my classes – get people at work excited about helping us along our journey! They get new recipes and get to feel like they are supporting you. YOU are awesome!
