Food is activism (at work)

I pack lunch each day for work. Friday I asked the manager of the faculty and staff dining room to consider making a chickpea or tofu dish for me today because I had a lunch meeting with an external colleague.

Chickpeas in paprika! Tasty!

Tomorrow he is making me tofu (he pulled the package out of the fridge to show me…how cute)! Food is activism!

Have you had an impact at work? Tell us!

  1. That was nice if him to do. The only thing that happens when I mention I don’t eat meat is a blank stare from my coworkers.

    1.  It’s definitely been a process. I tried to get them to offer Meatless Monday entrees, to no avail, so this was a big step!

  2. As a guy working in the male-dominated automotive industry, I found that getting my coworkers to embrace veg*an lifestyles to be impossible, but recently I have had some of my coworkers move from ridicule to genuine interest. Even though I doubt I’ll ever see any coworkers packing tofu or seitan, it’s nice to see some sort of change.

    1. Benjamin, that is really awesome that they are expressing interest. I would love to hear how things progress — please let me know!

  3. Last tuesday we went out for lunch and one of my coworkers decided to try the vegetarian dish! Even though sometimes you get crazy looks or stares, I always tell them I’m vegetarian and I’m glad I do. Wondering how they’re going to react when I ask for something w/o dairy and eggs.. :p
