Thank you, dear readers, for answering my video question. I harvested a bit from my garden!
Red Romaine Lettuce
and Red Russian Kale
With fresh lettuce and kale in hand–and a farmer’s market trip that resulted in fresh strawberries, french breakfast radish and pickled green tomatoes from Dr. Pickle–we came up with this salad:
JL’s Bistro Garden-Farmers Market Salad (PRINTABLE RECIPE)
Serves 1
Ingredients & Method
- A handful of red romaine lettuce, keep leaves whole and line the salad plate with the leaves
- A handful of red Russian kale, torn into bite size pieces and massaged with olive oil and sea salt
- 1 french breakfast radish, sliced into match sticks
- 2-3 strawberries, quartered
- 1 small pickled green tomato, sliced
- S+P, to taste
By massaging the kale in a bit of olive oi, it kept the salad nice and light because that was the only oil used. There was no need for acid (vinegar or citrus juice) because we used the pickled tomatoes. The combination of the radish with the strawberries and green tomatoes provided a crunch of spiciness with a sweet and savory twist.
There is nothing like enjoying vegetables from my own garden. Nothing!
What are you eating from your garden these days?

Congrats on your own salad! I’m not eating anything yet from my garden 🙁 The lettuce has not grown – still too cold here I think. I had few kale plants that I let go to seed to start new plants. The peas are the star performers, and are growing well but no actual peas yet. Nicely done on your part!
Thank you! I love fresh peas. I’ll bet you’re anxious to dig in!
I love radishes with strawberries – the contrast works really well together (crunch/soft, spice/sweet). I’m “trying” to kill my meager herb garden. I think it’s too hot… *sigh*
I’m having mixed results with my herbs. My cilantro bolted. Bummer. The thyme is doing well but the jury is out on the dill and parsley.
I love to see the fruits of your labors! What lovely greens.
Thanks, Gena! Can’t believe how happy my little garden makes me when I see each morning! LOL
lovely green leaves! i feel energized by just looking at them!
Thank you! I had a small salad of greens and herbs last night. So fresh!
Yum, the salad looks great! Lately I’ve been eating a lot of herbs and green onions from my garden.
Green onions! Next year i need to add those to the garden!
I’m envious of your garden.
Elizabeth, I can’t believe how easy it has been to grow the garden in small planters…though I’m not so sure my eggplant is going to make it 🙁
How freaking awesome it must be to eat the greens you grew! Can you tell I’ve never had a garden? I’ll live vicariously through yours. Nice job! 🙂
LOL! Thanks, Carrie! I’m now a hug advocate for deck/urban gardening. So easy in small planters!
YUM! Doesn’t it taste better when you grow it yourself? Definitely looking forward to having a garden again when I move back home. That lettuce and kale looks amazing!
Angela! Hello! I’m so glad you stopped by! Yes, it really does taste better. And it’s not just in my head! 😉

I couldn’t agree more! It’s so much fun just going out into your garden, take what you need and eat it. It’s also much tastier I think.. Don’t know if it is just the idea or if it is really so, I guess the last 😉
A few days ago we ate our very first cucumber, it was absolutely delicious! So much more taste and less watery then the ones you buy in stores. There’s also an eggplant almost ready (though I don’t like eggplant, but the rest of the family does).. We also put some chard in our lasagna last week, yum! And basil, arugula, … All tastytasty!
Oh, Sara, you have quite the bounty! It all sounds delicious! I just love a fresh, crisp cucumber.
Lucky you! I do love my sprouts and herbs in my porch garden. It’s “live” food at its best, eaten when freshly picked. Yum.
