Can I eat this yet? (A vlog question from the garden)

Help! I have a question about my garden!  Please take a look at this short video question and offer me some advice (thank you in advance).

P.S. On my recent trip to Philadelphia I had the pleasure of dining at Mih Lah with my pal Lee.  I wrote a review, Vegan Philly Cheesesteak at Mi Lah: A Field Report, for quarrygirl.com. I hope you’ll check it out!

  1. Looks good! That’s about how long romaine lettuce is at the store. And like you said you don’t want it to get tough, so even if you harvest it a bit early that’s better than later 🙂

(You’re so cute btw, can’t wait to meet you in August!!)

  2. You can totally eat it!  Lettuce doesn’t like extreme heat and will “bolt” and turn bitter once there is sustained high temperatures so you want to eat it before that.  And you could start by just trimming off a few leaves at a time!  Yummy!

  3. I don’t have a huge amount of experience but I picked a few leaves of our buttercrunch lettuce yesterday as my afternoon salad snack and was in heaven. It was a huge head and I’m starting to think that’s how lettuce works. You pick the ‘ripe’ outer leaves and let the others continue to mature. The butter crunch is supposed to get more bitter as time goes on. Pick one leaf, wash it, see how it tastes. I’m still mystified by our arugula, though. 🙂

  4. Yes, you can eat it, baby lettuce is very nutritious. Also baby kale leaves are great, you don’t want to let the leaves get too large because the nutrient content actually goes down.
