I’m reeling! Saturday morning I headed up to Golden, CO (no time for Coors!) to be a vendor for the first time at a Veg Fest. Selling copies of Vegan for Her, natch!
I was pretty much over the moon at VegFest Colorado because in addition to selling 25 books on day one, I got to introduce the keynote speaker John Schlimm, someone I have adored from afar and finally got to meet. Later that day I also got to meet the Vegan Black Metal Chef, who is a complete and total rock star and super-nice.
As I was working my table a nice gentleman, who seemed so familiar to me, walked up and said hello. OMG! James McWilliams! We have “known” one another online – I shared a “vegan conversion story” on his site a year ago and we are both involved with Our Hen House. I immediately asked if we could take a selfie photo. He said yes!
The next day Ginny and her husband Mark joined Dave and I at the Vegan for Her table. We had tons of fun! In the afternoon I did a cooking demo + presentation on tips for the busy non-cook and pulled Ginny up to share nutritional information on the topics I covered in my talk.
It was standing-room only and we had a blast.
James was in the audience for the cooking demo and he wrote about it yesterday on his site. His utter kindness and support rendered me rather speechless. You see, I get some backlash about ‘my kind’ of activism. The whole food thing. The whole, ‘meeting people where they are’ thing. And to have an animal rights activist and thinker like James, who I admire beyond words, get what I’m doing and to share it, well, like I said, I am speechless. And moved.
Ann and Peter Swissdorf of Vegan Life Colorado – and their awesome volunteer corps, including PR dynamo Yvonne Lynott – are responsible for putting on VegFest Colorado. They did a superb job and I am so grateful to know them and to work with them in Colorado on behalf of animals. I am also truly grateful for my husband – who worked the VegFest table all weekend. In fact, we sold out of our books. – 50+ copies of Vegan for Her out in the world – and he may have sold more than I did. (Ginny’s husband Mark rocked the book sales, too!)
It was a great weekend.
And today is great day.
Vegan for Her is officially available! I must confess that I still have thoughts of “did this book really happen?”
It did.
Ginny and I will celebrate tonight.
And I will celebrate you, my dear readers, because you have made every single step of my vegan journey, and professional transformation, possible. I am grateful.

Oh I love that picture of you and the Vegan Black Metal Chef!
I’m sorry to hear you get backlash about your approach but I guess that happens to everyone out there doing something!
Good point, @jesseanneoh:disqus! We just have to keep doing what we do!
Thank you for recognizing what we all know here in Denver – we have one of the greatest VegFest’s in the country! Hoping more and more people will show up to enjoy it next year. Major kudos to the Swissdorf’s and all the volunteers they assemble, working tirelessly, to make this dream a reality. More animals saved each year thanks to VegFest Colorado – WOO HOO!
Could not agree more, @WildCatAdvocate:disqus, both that VegFest CO rocks and that Ann and Peter are AMAZING advocates and activists!
SO happy for you JL! I’ve been following along as you guys do your press for the book – I keep getting google alerts (I have an alert set for “vegan pregnancy”) for articles about you guys popping up all over the web. Love seeing it all happen, and I’m just so so happy for you guys.
