The other morning I walked out onto the deck, snipped some kale leaves and, shortly after, drank this:
JL’s Garden Kale Smoothie (PRINTABLE RECIPE)
Serves 1
- 1 cup filtered water
- Big handful of Red Russian Kale
- 1 handful of fresh strawberries (from the farmer’s market!)
- 1 T dark chocolate protein powder
- 1/2 to 1 cup of ice
Toss everything into a high-speed blender and drink up!
Delicious! Are you drinking anything from your garden?

Yes! Herbs. Maybe next year I will grow kale. I heard it’s easy. Is that true? Does it like sun, half-sun or shade? Wet or dry soil? Can you grow it in a pot?
Honestly the kale has been easier than the herbs (what does that say about me?!) My cilantro bolted and I didn’t even know what that meant. Boo. The parsley and dill are just “okay” The mini globe basil and thyme are doing great, though.
Kale? No work at all. Plant and they just grow! It’s such a hearty leaf. Mostly sun (a few hours of afternoon) shade. I have it in a big plastic storage box (poked holes on the bottom) and five plants are thriving (next to one fennel plant). The young leaves are as delicious as the larger leaves. The only bummer is that, unlike lettuce, when it’s gone, it’s gone. So I’ve only been harvesting exactly what I’ll eat at that moment.
Looks great! I love throwing kale and other greens from my garden into smoothies.
Nothing like it!
Drinking from my garden? No, I don’t like the taste of dirt. 🙂 Actually, I left my container garden behind in Austin. I’m hoping my son will enjoy it, but it’ll probably just die off while I’m gone.
Ha! How long are you in S.D.?
I’m still preparing myself for green monsters :p I can’t help but be a little afraid.
Spinach is a great way to start. It’s very mild and you truly do not taste it, you just see all the green 🙂
I’m gonna try when our spinach is fully grown (fresh gardenveggies yum).
Red Russian Kale is a very high in beta carotene and contains other vitamins, wow is it okay for a pregnant woman? I hope so, my friend is looking for a vegan recipes.
Hi Raquel –I wish I could help but I am definitely not qualified to answer any questions about nutrition and pregnancy. Sorry!
hey Jl! thanks for the inspiration. I just made a version of this with blueberries instead of straweberries since that is what I had around. it’s not bad and is sure healthy. Bridget asked for some and she just had seconds!! cheers, Megan
Meg, I love that Bridget wanted more! So cute! She’s a future vegan! 😉 No seriously, you are really teaching her that healthy food is yummy food, which is great!
