Restaurant Week: Jolo’s Kitchen

Happy Monday! I did something I don’t normally do— I posted over the weekend. I couldn’t help myself.  I made a Cucumber & Beet Noodle Salad with Avo-Hemp Dressing (raw) for lunch Saturday and had to post it.

I hope you’ll check it out!

It’s Restaurant Week on JL goes Vegan!  Actually, I wasn’t planning a Restaurant Week series but I had two unexpected meals out over the weekend, and I’ve been sitting on a post that I wrote about a recent night out with friends, so I decided to just dedicate a whole week to dining out.  If you like it, I may make Restaurant Week an ongoing part of the blog— so let me know!

First up:  Jolo’s Kitchen, New Rochelle, NY

I’ve been eating vegan for over a year and only now have I ventured to Jolo’s Kitchen: Vegan Cultural Restaurant, a quick 5+ miles from my home!

From Jolo’s Kitchen’s blog:

At Jolo’s Kitchen everything is vegan and Ital! What does that mean? Vegan means no animal products at all. In addition Ital, a Rasta word derived from Vital -something we stand for- means that eating with us equals healthy foods, fresh ingredients, surprisingly realistic veggie-meats and delicious flavors.

Jolo’s is small, with only a few tables. It’s completely vegan. On this first trip my husband and I just wanted to get something to go.  We both decided to go with the medium small plate ($8) from the take-out menu. You take a look at what was cooked fresh for the day and choose.  The offerings included cabbage, spinach, beans, quinoa, mushrooms and, the protein was “beef.”   Tough decision!

I went with this:

“Beef”, spinach and mushrooms

Oh. My. Goodness.  The Caribbean flavors come shining through.

The “beef”

I loved all three dishes. I believe the “beef” was made with seitan and it was so flavorful. Spicy but not hot.  The server suggested the mushrooms and he was right.  And I love me some spinach — this did not disappoint!

I should confess that as they were filling up our go plates, Dave noticed some pastries. Oh my. Pastries stuffed with vegan deliciousness: jerk tofu, vegetables, etc.  We decided it was imperative to share a pastry stuffed with peas

Trust me. It was as delicious as it looks.

My husband, the ominvore?  He thinks we should eat at Jolo’s every Friday night. And now that I know I can swing by on my way home from work, just a 20-ish minute detour, we may be doing just that.

Speaking of restaurants, let me direct you to the fabulous quarrygirl.com for my latest vegan field report.  I met up with some fabulous blogger and Twitter friends

JL, VKO, Andrea (hiding), Noelle (thanks for the pic!), Barbara and Alicia.

at Josie’s East.  The meal was average but the good company more than made up for it!

Have you dined out recently?  What vegan eats and treats have you enjoyed?
