Good morning friends! It’s Sunday, the sun is shining and I’m feeling like an empowered and happy vegan! Attending the Connecticut Veg Fest yesterday may have something to do with it! I heard some great speakers, hung out with wonderful vegan friends and met some interesting vendors. I’ll share all of that with you tomorrow or Tuesday. For now…
This week’s vegan links and news
After enjoying sweets and treats from Allison’s Gourmet for quite some time, I finally met the marvelous Allison at Vida Vegan Con last summer. I am very honored that I was last week’s Fridays with Friends interview! I have been threatening to share my third FAQ “I thought you ran marathons?” on this blog and I give you a teaser to why I do not run marathons, now, in this interview. Check it out!
Yesterday Tiffany of Como Water featured me as her April Favorite Veg on the Web! I love Tiffany’s blog and this was a real treat. I developed a JL-style recipe (yep, beans/greens/grains + pressure cooker) just for Tiffany and her readers. If you want a new recipe from me, be sure to check out my Chik’n Lentil Noodle Soup!
And in other news:
- Our Hen House offered an essay contest - “Calling All Herbivores: Tell Us Why It’s Unethical to Eat Meat” – in response to the New York Times challenge to make an ethical case for eating meat. Throughout the week they posted the runner-up essays and Friday announced the winning essay Alan W. Peck.
- The was a Case of Mad Cow Disease Found in California. Thought you should know.
- Sorry if you’re eating while you read this but the Physicians Committee for Responsible Medicine (PCRM) shared results of a study on Fecal Contamination in Retail Chicken Products. Among the findings: “Chicken products from every city and every grocery store chain tested positive for fecal contamination. Overall, 48 percent of chicken samples tested positive.” Can I get an “Ewwwwww” from the choir?
- Moving on from poo to Pho, The New York Times offered a terrific series, Four Bowls of Pho, which included a delicious recipe for a vegan broth base (rather than beef, chicken or fish stock) that looks amazing!
- The LA Times asks, “To effect change, should the 99% go vegan?”
- I found this Cosmetic Label Decoder: What Natural, Organic And Cruelty-Free Really Mean from BlissTree really helpful.
- Surprisingly Calcium-Rich Foods That Aren’t Milk (most are plant-based!)
