Vacation dining at non-vegan restaurants

Hi folks, still enjoying the fun and sun in Florida so no “Vegan News” from me today.

I am the only plant-based eater on this family vacation so I’m trying to find decent eats in very non-vegan (as in not even close) restaurants. We had lunch at the Cherry Pocket Steak & Seafood Shak in Lake Wales, FL.

Not one single thing on the menu was vegetarian.  I asked for a salad with no cheese, no meat but tons and tons of vegetables.  “We have tomatoes.” Okay.

Lettuce, tomato and crouton salad

It was small but fine.

Later, we met up with Mom and Dad’s golfing buddies for drinks at the golf course, followed by dinner (and dancing – I swear, I danced for hours!) at Duffers Sports Grille in Sebring, FL.  I was not happy when I first reviewed the menu but then I had an “aha!” moment.  Pizza, hold the cheese!

Very good! I even let a few omnivores try it. I said, “See, you can actually taste the veggies when they are not all covered up in cow’s milk!”  Hehehe.

Last night we had a cookout and dance party at Mom and Dad’s (yes we did).  I’ll share those vegan eats with you soon.

In the meantime, we’re off for a beach day!

  1. Long before vegan options were ubiquitous everywhere, I often had work lunches at non-vegan restaurants and made it work. Thanks for reminding us all that its possible!

    1.  Yeah, once I get out of NYC I have to remind myself that lots of vegans are finding their way without tofu, quinoa or seitan on the menu!

  2. While I’m not a vegan, I know a similar problem since I don’t eat red meat. My partner loves his steak, so sometimes he wants to go to a steak house, and I have to pray they have something there I can eat.  Same thing with days where I don’t want to eat meat at all.

    1.  It can definitely be a challenge. I like to share what I find so that people can see that perhaps not “ideal” it is possible to eat vegan, in all types of places!
