Portland / Vida Vegan Con #1: Food Trucks, Voodoo Doughnuts and a Waterfront Run

Wednesday morning I was up early and on a 7:00 a.m. flight from Long Beach, CA to Portland, OR.  The Vida Vegan Con host hotel was kind enough to let me check in early.  The only thing on my schedule for the entire day was dinner with a good friend, at his home in Portland, so I had the day to play. And play, I did!

I took off for what ended up being a 3 – 4 mile round trip walk. Good thing.

First up:  Oregon Wines on Broadway

to select a bottle of wine to take to dinner and, hell, I wanted a few bottles for the hotel room!

Oregon makes some delicious Pinot Noir!

Next up, my first food truck experience! DC Vegetarian

I ordered the Steak and Cheese (it’s vegetarian but all you have to do is order it “vegan”)

Holy food truck. That was some of the best seitan I’ve ever had! What a sandwich!  I was STUFFED.

But not too stuffed because I went from the food truck to Voodoo Doughnuts (The Magic is in the Hole!!!)

There was a long line for these doughnuts — they happen to have a large selection of vegan doughnuts so I couldn’t resist and put up with the wait. The line moved pretty quickly and I opted for a half-dozen (hey, I’m in town for five days, don’t judge!)

Hey, wait, that’s only five!

Oh yeah, I forgot this guy…

He’s still in refrigerator. I can’t decide when I’m going to bite his head off.

The vegan doughnuts are off the hook.  They do have many vegan flavors other than chocolate but, what can I say? I like to stick to a theme.  Get thyself to Voodoo Doughnuts next time you are in Portland. They are worth the wait!

After my feeding frenzy long walk I lazed around the pool for a few hours before traveling on the Street Car to my friend’s house in Northwest Portland for dinner. He made a gorgeous salad and vegan polenta dish for dinner. (No pictures, sometimes a food blogger just needs to hang out with a friend!) We enjoyed our meal outside. I was able to see Mount St. Helen from his upstairs window in the back of the house and Mount Hood from the front window. Lovely.

Thursday morning I slept in (9+ hours of sleep, people!) and then went for a run on the waterfront.

Gorgeous!

Then it was time for lunch and vegan shopping with Fran Costigan (oh yeah, vegan dessert chef extraordinaire!) Julia of Snarky Vegan and Kristen of Skull-Sugar. You’ll have to wait until tomorrow for details on our fun day!
