Just another vegan Saturday in NYC

I had such a fun Saturday!  My girlfriend Lee (who blogs at The Vegan Version) took the train into NYC and we played the day away!

We started with lunch at Sacred Chow.  I wrote a rave about my first dining experience at Sacred Chow and was excited to return. We went for it by each ordering the 3 Tapas/$18.  My three:

Corn Tortilla Lasagna
Sautéed Shitake Mushrooms
Massaged Kale in Dijon Dressing

Lee ordered the black olive seitan, root vegetable latkes and these delicious “meat balls.”

Mama's Soy Meatballs w/Sicilian Sauce

The theme of the day, clearly, was go big or go home. We shared the six tapas plates and loved everything.  We decided serious walking was in order.

We walked to Moo Shoes.

Lee and I both love shoes and handbags – and we are trying to veganize those pieces in our closets – but no luck at the store Saturday.

We then walked back across town to Tribeca to see my good friend Christy Morgan, The Blissful Chef, at her cooking demo and book signing at the Whole Foods Wellness Club. It was so much fun!

Christy whipped up some yummy treats.

Mac 'n' Kale Salad
Magical Raw Tacos

Curried Sweet Potato and Carrot Soup

Have you picked up a copy of Christy’s book Blissful Bites?

After the demo our motley vegan crew (Christy, Lee, Kate and Sharon and I) headed uptown to meet my husband for dinner at Candle 79.

My friend Dianne mixed this beauty.

Strawberry Fields, which included vodka, Jasmine liqueur and muddled strawberries.

YUM!

We feasted!  Sadly, the lighting situation wasn’t great for food photos so let me just say that the starter special, which included seared artichoke and brussels sprouts in a jalapeno sauce, was incredible.

For dinner, I had the seitan special.

Cashew-Crusted Seitan

What you can’t see? Green mashed potatoes under that seitan! (It was St. Patrick’s Day.)  Candle 79 never disappoints!

By now, after viewing the enormous amount of food consumed during the day, it should (hopefully) come as no surprise that I skipped dessert. But I didn’t miss an opportunity to take a star pic.

Newly vegan Dax Shepard walked in with Kristin Chenoweth.  I “pretended” I was taking a picture of Sharon and Christy so I could snap Dax.

It was an amazing day of friends, food and fun.

The next day I literally could not eat anything until the afternoon. I stopped by Whole Foods to hit the salad bar for something light and fresh.

Yep, that hit the spot.

  1. Good Morning JL!
Sounds like the perfect day to me 🙂 Just out of curiosity- are you sure it Christen Chenoweth and not Kristen Bell? Her and Dax are a couple, and she recently went vegan, which are my only thoughts on it being Ms. Bell… they kind of look alike too 🙂 Either way – love celeb sightings at yummy vegan spots!!

    1.  Oh, girl, I know my celebs! 🙂 It was definitely Kristin Chenoweth, the original Glenda, the Good Witch of the play Wicked (I saw her in Wicked twice and met her at the Wicked opening night party)!   In fact I said “where’s Kristen Bell?” So I googled and it looks like Dax and K Chenoweth are filming a movie together –  so two friends hanging out after work, is my best guess!

  2. I love that you couldn’t eat until the next afternoon.  I’ve been there… a sure sign of a successful day! 🙂

  3. Sounds like fun! And I can see Dax Shepard in the background! LOL I love parenthood! 🙂

  4. What a spectacular weekend!   Candle 79 is on my list for the next trip to NYC (I’ll meet you there :).  Now I will add Sacred Chow too.  Last time I was in NYC we went to Pure Food and Wine as we wanted to try some fancy raw food.  It was excellent!

  5. Woah you have lots of awesome friends… and you ate some incredible looking food – good food, good company, celebrity spotting, what more could you want?!?

  6.  I have a couple SN’s bags, love them! Also love MattandNat.com and Gunasthebrand.com (crazy expensive, crazy delicious)

  7. oh i can’t believe i missed you by a day! i was out in NYC with my family from thursday to sunday–i will be in an upcoming tv show on the FoodNetwork and we filmed on thursday–so perfect excuse to bring family from CA with me and experience manhattan…we ate at Candle 79 on Friday night…my first time…and brought to my attention by bloggers like you : )  loved the seitan piccata and the lentil kale salad… you are so fortunate to be living near an amazing city with so many vegan options! the other vegan restaurant we ate at was Franchia…that was equally superb!

  8. What a cool day, so jealous! I’ve always wanted to go to MooShoes, bummer you didn’t find anything! Finding good vegan shoes in my size is not easy either.

  9. Christy was crashing with me and my husband that weekend. The afternoon she arrived, we were totally having that discussion “if you’re going to do something, do it BIG” over mung bean crepes and curried yucca w/green beans, and cup after cup of piping hot green oolong tea. I’m so glad that y’all enjoyed your meal at Chow, and then dinner at the Candle. Such an awesome way to spend the day! Go big or go home is how I live my life! Totally glad that y’all convinced her to go big.

      1. Thanks, JL! Wish you’d been there Sunday night to see the absolute feast that we had. There was more food than is decent for four people to consume, and it was all capped off with desserts from some place uptown. Man, was that a memorable trip!
