Ethical meat-eating, Save the date(s), and Vegan news you can use (4/22/12)

This week’s vegan links and news

Thousands of readers took us up on our challenge to make an ethical case for eating meat. Our panel of judges — Mark Bittman, Jonathan Safran Foer, Andrew Light, Michael Pollan, Peter Singer — narrowed the pool down to these six finalists. Vote below by midnight on April 24 on the essay you think makes the strongest case. You can only vote for one.

Stop Chasing Skinny

Have you stopped chasing skinny or an image that others have imposed upon you? Submit your story today!

Questions for you:

  1. Are you voting in the New York Times ‘ethical meat-eating’ essay contest?
  2. My “mark your calendar” section is fairly East Coast – centric – do you have events you would like me to announce next week?
  3. Have you read the book Vegan is Love and/or read the critiques? Curious what you think about it!

This week I have a few reviews, plus a giveaway, planned. In the meantime, enjoy your Earth Day!

I just voted for the NYT essay. I’m glad to see others feel the same as the one I voted for is clearly in the lead:  ”I’m about to eat meat for the first time n 40 years”

Hey JL, I’m considering going to Victoria BC’s first ever vegan festival…organized by Sarah Kramer herself (did you see she’s speaking at BlogHer ’12?)

I’ve been to Victoria one about 10 years go, and loved it a lot. This seems like a good excuse to go back :)

Hello JL! It would be simply fantastic if you could promote/announce “Light Up the Night with Paul Watson” (seashepherd.org/nyc), an event being put on by the Sea Shepherd NYC chapter (of which I am a member). Captain Paul Watson will be at the event along with many crew members, both past and present. There will also be awesome food by Candle Cafe, Cinnamon Snail, Verite Catering and Vegan Treats!
Auction items will include past campaign gear and artwork created by Sea Shepherd crew members. Guests will also be entered into a drawing for eco-friendly door prizes. It should be a good time and a great fundraiser for Sea Shepherd!
